Biography:
Jerry Bear is a fictional character primarily known for his association with the band the Grateful Dead. He originated as a design element within the band's visual identity and merchandise.
The Jerry Bear imagery first appeared on the back cover of the Grateful Dead's 1973 live album, "History of the Grateful Dead, Volume One (Bear's Choice)." The album was dedicated to and named after Owsley "Bear" Stanley, the band's sound engineer and financier during their early years. Stanley designed the bears, drawing inspiration from a metal sculpture he created.
The dancing bears, with their distinct bright colors and whimsical poses, quickly became a symbol synonymous with the Grateful Dead and their devoted fanbase, the Deadheads. The bears continue to appear on Grateful Dead merchandise and remain a recognizable pop culture icon.
